"Mental health like happiness. I don't want my human to feel unhappy, but I think she really is."

Zaius smiles when his friend finally took over. His walked behind Galen, and gently placed a hand on his shoulder. "You're young Galen, and you're acting like a bloody Renegade. You're not using tactics to control, and you believe other means won't do anything." his head shook, little annoyed. "You haven't tried, how would you know?" He stepped back, then looked at her. "Don't be afraid of using means, Galen. She's an animal, not an ape."

"But if I frighten her- then she'll reject me as an owner and won't trust me. She already doesn't by the looks of it." Galen tried to explain. "If I use harsh means, it'd hurt her."

"And I'm not a brainless dimwitted stupid human." Melanie piped in. "I won't trust any alpha who mistreats me just because you approve of it."
Melanie wasn't that dimwitted to know what Zaius could be implying. He wanted her 'smacked' or 'slapped' or 'used in target practice'. She was still able to think on her own and despising every moment of being weaker than they were. Sure, patch her up, but that wouldn't help her psych. Kindness and compassion go a long way, but it seemed these apes lacked it. Maybe the vets had it, but even then, they could over power her.

Maximus listened to the human talk away. She was so 'strong-willed' it would take a while to break her. "Like a wild horse." He shook his head. "This human needs some further lessons of what to do."

Melanie shook her head. "I'm delicate. If you think I can handle target practice...you're wrong."
Melanie wanted nothing more than to disappear through the floor. She was tired of being used as a punching bag. "I wasn't born to serve any type of ape. I'm a human. So what? I had nothing to do with what the past did to any Overlord."

Zaius amusingly chuckled, shaking his head. He harshly gripped the back of the chair, leaning his intimidating body to Melanie. "Pah, you wouldn't last a week, mutt." he snorts. "All you have is attitude, and actually no gut to actually do anything. Scatter, scurry, but not confront. You may have your shoulders high, and 'I can do better' attitude." He moved closer. "Well, you will get a harsh awakening under Galen in his grounds. Because, I can assure you, yourself will change. And if you don't, it will only be hell." He states, removing his grip, then stepping back.

Melanie already believed that she wouldn't last long for a week anyway. "Nothing new to me." The words were already out of her mouth and couldn't seem to stop them. She gritted her teeth. "Nothing new at all." She repeated. She didn't really step away from the intimidating figure of Zaius, or Kratos, or Maximus. Hell? She didn't bother to glance behind her to see Galen's expression and she knew none of them cared about her past anyway so why bring it up? She was already feeling that. "I'm already in hell." She replied, in an emotionless tone. "There is no such thing as - compassion or care." She had been observant and all of the actions against her. "There is no such thing in the world such as that." Melanie rubbed the back of her head. "Because every single 'ape' or person I've ever met is heartless and cruel." Then she pointed to Galen. "Least he has a heart. Whereas none of you seem to have one."

Galen was surprised that he was the only one pointed out as having a heart. He sighed. "Some of us have compassion. If we didn't, you would be stuffed in a museum." He wasn't cruel. Nor did he intend to 'harm' the human and make her life a living hell. Unfortunately, an unhappy human would eventually give up and become sad. By the sounds of it, she was all too familiar.
She's going to have a hard adjustment.

He smirks, very well amused by her continued defiance. His head shook, gripping the chair once again. "That's because you refuse to obey! Your kind is always trouble in defiance," he releases the chair, it spins. "Be better off dead," he mutters to himself, but sure the nearby apes would hear. "Obeying is much easier if you just accept, Melanie. I can show you videos of ones who obey and not. might just help change that stressful behavior," he smirks, stepping back again. He viciously smiles. "Especially the ones who end up 'somewhere.'"

Melanie shook her head as her defiance was only because she had it rough even after Carol had disappeared. Her past was always coming to haunt her. These apes were like her past. It wouldn't be that easy and she sighed as if she had the whole entire world on her shoulders. There was a heavy weight- and it wouldn't release. Tense. But there was no fear- if she showed fear, it was going to be like her past. The wicked cruelty of people or apes preyed on that.
"You prey on fear. You prey on weakness." Melanie found herself saying. "You expect me to bend over backwards to suit your needs, over mine." She finally spoke the truth. "You expect absolute obedience from me...But it doesn't work that way, Zaius." She could understand names. "It doesn't work that way with me." It wasn't because she was defiant. It was the truth. Her mind was hers and so was her 'defiant behavior'. She didn't want to be intimidated and took a step from the spinning chair. It nearly hit her chin. Almost coming close to her.
"You never saw the things I saw." She finally said. "You never had to fight to get away from something that hurts you every day." Then she continued. "You never received a whiplash to your backside for talking your own mind." Melanie looked up into his eyes. Her eyes were sad. "And I bet you never had to worry about the next punishment either."

Maximus had a few things to say before Zaius did. "Melanie. The only freedom you will have is to obey our laws and rules. Within obedience comes with freedom. Surely you can understand that." He was trying to show some kindness because what she said sounded like she had been educated way beyond her years.
The false cliche that nothing would really harm her was probably something he couldn't say to her. It wasn't always true. He could sense her fear. She wasn't just some run of the mill animal that had no intelligence. She was observant.
